Ongar-Castaheany Cycle Network

Thursday, June 7, 2012

Fingal County Council have put on public display the new Ongar-Castaheany-Littlepace cycle and footpath upgrade scheme.  The scheme is funded by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar.

Last year I encouraged the council to apply to the Department of Transport for this type of scheme as I was aware that similar applications were being made from other local authorities. I am conscious of the many people want their children to have safer access on foot and by cycle to local shops and schools in the area.
The scheme will provide for new and improved integrated cycle and walking infrastructure in the Ongar, Castaheany and Littlepace area. It is of course very timely as National Bike Week takes place from 16th to the 24th of June.

The proposed works (details here) will comprise of the following:

1. In the environs of the Mary Mother of Hope National School and Castaheany Community Centre:

· New and improved on and off road cycle tracks where appropriate

· Improved pedestrian facilities

· New toucan and pedestrian crossings

· Alterations to the road layout and roundabouts.

2. In the environs of Scoil Ghrainne National School, Scoil Setanta and Phibblestown Community Centre:

· New and improved off road cycle tracks to the main school entrance

· Improved pedestrian facilities

· New and improved existing pedestrian crossings

· Alterations to the road layout and existing roundabout at the main school entrance

3. In the environs of Castaheany Educate Together National School, St. Benedicts National School and the Ongar Community Centre:

· New and improved off road cycle tracks to the main school entrance along Barry’s Lane and from the roundabout on the Ongar Road.

· Improved pedestrian facilities and crossings including a new pedestrian entrance from Willan’s Way

· Alterations to the road layout where required

4. New off-road cycle tracks are to be provided at the following locations:

· From the Linnetfields roundabout northwards to the Littlepace Road Roundabout and then eastwards towards the roundabout at Mary

· From the Mary Mother of Hope National School roundabout south towards the public open space entrance.
5. New and improved footpaths and cycle tracks in public open space areas including a new link from Hazelbury Park to the Hartstown Road

6. New traffic calming measures at existing roundabouts with upgraded pedestrian & cyclist facilities.

7. Carriageway alterations and modifications to facilitate the provision of footpaths and cycleways

8. Provision of new advanced directional road signage, road boundary treatment, landscaping works, new road markings, new public lighting, new underground telecommunications ducting & other utilities.
